Helen Gestwicki - Medical Herbalist

Profile :: I am originally from the East of England, and have been living, studying and working in Edinburgh for over 16 years. I have worked in the complementary health field for more than 11 years, much of which has been spent studying Herbal Medicine for which I gained a BSc (Hons) degree in 2002.

I am now also a qualified Nutritional Therapist and practice both therapies at Napiers The Herbalists in Edinburgh.

I am passionate about good health and see 'health' as a positive state of being rather than the absence of disease. I enjoy cooking, eating and growing my own food at my allotment, as well as running, yoga, hillwalking and cycling to keep me fit and well.

Philosophy :: I work with clients to help them find ways to improve their physical, mental, and emotional health through a nutritionally balanced diet and herbal medicine. I believe in using simple plant medicines with a strong traditional usage, and use native plants where possible. In Nutritional Therapy, I try to do as much as possible through diet, supporting this up with food supplements and further investigations where necessary. I encourage my clients to find a balance in all aspects of their lives that is enjoyable, healthy and sustainable.

I have a special interest in women's health issues especially PMS, Menopause, fibroids and fertility issues and run the Napiers Well Woman and Menopause Clinic at Napiers Hamilton Place clinic. I am also part of the Napiers Detox Clinic and the Edinburgh Fertility Clinic. However, I also see a wide range of people of all ages and can provide help, advice and support for most ailments.

Qualifications :: I studied Herbal Medicine at the College of Phytotherapy and have completed an 4 year degree course including 500 hours of supervised clinical training. I also have a diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition from the College of Naturopathic Medicine in Edinburgh and am a member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy (CPP) and the British Association of Nutritional Therapists (BANT). My background is in biological sciences and, as well as my degree in Herbal Medicine, I have a BSc (Hons) degree in Neuroscience from the University of Edinburgh.

"People ascribe the greatest healing power to drugs that have come from farthest away, drugs that cost the most. In my long experience I have come to believe that people go to the ends of the Earth to look for something they could find right on their doorstep. If only we could learn to trust Nature"
Maurice Messegue - French Herbalist
